What Is the KOSPI Macro Momentum Index?
The KOSPI Macro Momentum Index combines the short-term direction of 8 global indicators — S&P500, NASDAQ, USD/KRW, VIX, US rates, WTI, the semiconductor index (SOX), and gold — into a 0–6 score. A higher score means the global environment is more favorable for KOSPI.
KOSPI tends to react more to the global macro environment than to domestic corporate earnings. In particular, US market direction, the USD/KRW rate, and VIX (fear index) have the biggest impact on KOSPI's short-term moves.
📌 The 8 Components and What They Mean
S&P500 · NASDAQ — KOSPI tends to rise alongside US market strength
USD/KRW Rate — A stronger won (falling rate) tends to bring in more foreign buying
VIX (Fear Index) — Lower VIX means more risk appetite → favorable for KOSPI
SOX Semiconductor Index — Directly linked given Samsung/SK Hynix's heavy weighting

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Should I buy KOSPI today?
A Macro Momentum score of Stage 3 (3.0–4.2) or higher means the global environment is favorable for KOSPI. Note this indicator is for same-day direction reference only, not an absolute buy signal. Also check MDD analysis for long-term entry timing.
Q. How does VIX affect KOSPI?
VIX (volatility index) reflects fear in the US market. Below 20, markets are stable and foreign investors tend to put money into emerging markets including KOSPI. Above 30, foreign outflows accelerate and KOSPI has historically dropped sharply in this pattern.
Q. What's the relationship between USD/KRW and KOSPI?
Generally, when the won strengthens (rate falls), foreign investors buy domestic stocks and KOSPI tends to rise. Conversely, when the won weakens (rate rises), foreign capital flows out, which is negative for KOSPI. A rate above 1,400 KRW can be a medium-term burden on KOSPI.
